Mozambique is located on the south-eastern coast of Africa and is bordered by Tanzania to the north, South Africa and Swaziland to the south, Zimbabwe to the west and Zambia and Malawi to the north-west. Mozambique is made up mainly of coastal lowlands, rising toward the west to a plateau ranging from 500 to 2,000 ft above sea level and on the western border to a higher plateau of between 6,000 to 8,000 ft, with mountains in the north, reaching a height of over 8,000 ft. The highest mountains are Namuli, Binga on the Zimbabwean border, and Serra Zuira in Sofala Province.
The most important river is the Zambezi, flowing south-east across the centre of Mozambique which flows into the Indian Ocean. The most important lake is Lake Niassa. The soil is rich and fertile in the river deltas and valleys, but southern and central Mozambique has poor and sandy soil, and parts of the interior are dry.
Maputo is the gateway to Mozambique and her glorious islands, and is a city with an intriguing mix of cultures and architecture, peasant fishermen and palm-fringed beaches. A colourful, vibrant, African city. Famous for its broad, leafy avenues, Maputo will linger in your memory as one of the most exquisite cities of Africa, with a countless reminders of centuries of both Arab and Portuguese culture with a few some remnants of the communist era, too. Ancient Catholic churches and mosques, fortresses and palaces, ornate Victorian mansions and superbly preserved Art Deco buildings, abound in Maputo.
Inhaca is a relaxed, laid back island paradise, where there are no high-rise hotels with hordes of holidaymakers crowding the beaches. This is still a real get-away island; a place for romantic walks along pristine beaches, snorkelling and diving among the coral reefs, deep- sea fishing excursions, balmy nights and starry skies. The island is an ecologically protected area and boasts diverse ecologies, from forested sand dunes, and grassy plains as well as mudflats. More than 200 species of birdlife have been recorded on the island.
