The Pilanesberg National Park lies on the border of the world- famous Sun City entertainment complex, and is 55 000 hectares in total.
Because part of the Pilanesberg is part and parcel of a 1200 million year old volcanic crater, the shape is almost perfectly circular. This ancient crater has a small lake in the centre.
The terrain is interesting and quite beautiful, and lies between the Kalahari Desert and the Lowveld. As a result, a variety of vegetation is found in the Pilanesberg National Park.
Found in the Pilanesberg, is a broad spectrum of animal species, most of which are commonly found in the national parks of South Africa.
Some of these are lion, elephant, both black and white rhino, buffalo, leopard, hyena, giraffe, hippo and crocodile. There is also a huge variety of birds, with over 300 different species found in the Pilanesburg area.
Despite the fact that the roads are not tarred, they are still in good condition and well- maintained, making travel by ordinary vehicle quite possible. There is in total, about 200 kilometres of road.
Hides for game watching are popular in the Pilanesburg, as is picnicking, massive walk-in aviaries. There are also numerous safe hiking trails, and night safari drives as well as flights over the park in hot air balloons can be arranged for the adventurous at heart. |
